General Description:

  • As a Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientists during routine medical laboratory tests. A Laboratory Assistant will work with senior staff process samples, perform tests, and record and analyze results. A successful Laboratory Assistant will possess knowledge of laboratory procedures, demonstrate strong attention to detail, possess excellent communication skills, and comply with all laboratory health and safety regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Complete appropriate routing, handling, and processing of various medical specimens by properly verifying samples to laboratory requisitions, verifying the correct sample(s) were received for the test(s) ordered, and documenting date and time of specimen receipt and/or any specimen discrepancies.
  • Identify problems and resolve issues internally when possible. Adhere to laboratory procedures when resolving problems.
  • Be familiar with protocol for ordering, crediting, noting-out, and canceling tests using a Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Manually process and/or load patient samples onto pre-analytical automated equipment and instruments.
  • Prepare, label, and store stock and work reagents.
  • Set up, perform maintenance on, maintain, calibrate, clean, test sterility of, and load reagents into medical laboratory equipment.
  • Perform Quality Control measures, including monitoring and replenishing reagents and laboratory inventory.
  • Ensure Pending List is kept current and continuously monitor turnaround times.
  • Coordinate services with Technical Support in order to troubleshoot analyzers.
  • Ensure confidentiality of protected health information and comply with Company Policy and Federal, State, CAP, HIPAA and CLIA regulations.
  • Transcribe printed laboratory results from instruments when instructed to by Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the compliance policies related to test ordering, which requires developing ability to research test ordering information on translation tables, computer system, and the directory of services.
  • Understand and follow all safety, infection control, and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen guidelines.
  • Be familiar with current work lists, test requisitioning, labeling, specimen storage and retrieval, and specimen status tracking.
  • Complete all required written documentation legibly and within assigned timeframe.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to foster a positive environment.

  • Participate in and support all Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement endeavors for the laboratory, as applicable.
  • In addition to an employee's typical work schedule, this position requires employees to work weekends, split shifts, overtime, and holidays if needed by the Company. Other duties may apply as necessary.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic laboratory and phlebotomy terminology along with Clinical Laboratory safety procedures.
  • Possess the ability to read, write, and speak English language. Must have legible handwriting.
  • Be proficient at data entry and be detail-oriented.
  • Be skilled with oral and written comprehension.
  • Understand administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing software and electronic files and records.
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritize tasks and engage in multi-tasking.
  • Have the ability to budget time and complete tasks/work assignments by predetermined deadline.
  • Be able to demonstrate a high degree of autonomy and possess exceptional time management skills.
